Bed Bugs In The News

Losing the Battle Against Bedbugs

By Dave Summers - WKYC TV Cleveland - October 27, 2010

CLEVELAND -- If you haven't encountered bedbugs in your home or travels yet chances are you will and in the near future.

In the 80's and 90's, legislation watered down pesticides to the point where exterminators say there is nothing chemically on the market that does a complete job of killing bedbugs.

The result? We are experiencing a massive resurgence nationwide and right here in Ohio.

In fact, exterminators say that within the next 12 months, one in six Ohio residents will have some kind of bedbug encounter.

They're not just in hotel beds. The critters are hitchhikers on everything from backpacks to coats and clothes. College campuses, movie theaters, even hospitals are reporting bedbug problems.

One solution that has proven effective in killing these pests are home heat treatments. Exterminators literally seal the space, then fill it with hot air. The temperatures get as high as 140 degrees.

The heat dries out bedbugs and any other bug that may be present. It also kills bacteria and germs.

But the process isn't cheap, as the usual application is around $3,000.
